DENNIS — The Cape and Islands District Attorney’s office has identified 60-year-old Fall River resident Matthew Maderios as the victim of a drowning at Mayflower Beach on Thursday.

According to the Cape Cod Times, at about 4 p.m. Thursday, Dennis police received a report of a possible drowning from Dennis Beach Department personnel, who said lifeguards were bringing the victim to shore, Dennis police Lieutenant Peter Benson says.

A Dennis police officer and a lifeguard performed CPR on Maderios, who was then taken by the Dennis Fire Department to Cape Cod Hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to the statement.

A state police detective’s unit has assumed control of an investigation into the circumstances of the drowning, according to Benson.
