On June 4th, 2017, at approximately 3:30 p.m., Trooper James DeAngelis of the State Police Barracks in South Boston, responded to a 911 call of a road rage incident on Route 93. A caller reported that a man in a Kia Forte, allegedly pulled a handgun from his vehicle and pointed it at the operator of another vehicle.

With the assistance of Sergeant William Fitzmaurice and Trooper Kevin Nichol, Trooper DeAngelis stopped the vehicle on Route 93 Southbound, just prior to Exit 15 in Boston. The driver, later identified as Gary A. Moniz, 64, of Fall River, was taken into custody without incident.

As a result of the investigation, Trooper Nichol located a loaded 9mm Beretta handgun in the vehicle. Troopers then determined that Moniz is not licensed to carry a firearm in Massachusetts.

Moniz was placed under arrested and brought to the South Boston Barracks for booking.

Moniz has been charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm without a license, and unlawful possession of ammunition without a permit.

Moniz was scheduled to appear in Dorchester District Court on Monday morning.
