A Fall River firefighter has been placed on administrative leave after allegedly traveling to Rhode Island to engage in sexual activity with a person he believed to be a 14-year-old girl.

Edward Mathias, 40, was arraigned Tuesday on charges of indecent solicitation of a child and electronically disseminating indecent material to a minor, according to a statement from Rhode Island State Police.

Mathias was arrested in Warwick Tuesday when he arrived at a location that had been pre-arranged by Rhode Island state police detectives.

In court later that day, Mathias, a 10-year veteran of the Fall River Fire Department, was released on $2,500 personal recognizance with conditions to have no contact with children and to comply with restrictions on his internet use.

The Fall River Fire Department said that once civil service protocol takes place, Mathias could go on unpaid leave. More action is pending following the outcome of legal proceedings, the department said.
