FALL RIVER — The attic of an apartment building on Fourth Street in Fall River caught on fire late Sunday night.

Fall River's Acting Fire Chief Michael Shey told WJAR, firefighters had to knock down the ceiling of the third floor to get to the fire, which had spread to the walls.

Parts of Fourth Street in Fall River were closed for hours.

Firefighters applauded a tenant with helping other people get out of the building.

The man told WJAR that he went outside and saw smoke coming from the building and that's when he knocked down the doors of the other tenants and told them to get out.

No injuries have been reported. A few animals were said to have been rescued as well including a dog and parakeet.

The incident and cause of the fire remain under investigation.
