Years before she was the iconic Meredith Grey in Grey’s Anatomy, Ellen Pompeo was growing up in Everett, MA trying to make a few bucks.

To talk about her first new role in 20 years, Pompeo appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show, where they bonded over their love of Boston.

Clarkson clearly did her homework as she asked Pompeo about one of her first jobs, and it was a far cry from being the star of a hit television series.

Ellen Pompeo on the Kelly Clarkson Show

Pompeo has returned to the screen for her newest role in the Hulu miniseries A Good American Family, and she joined Kelly Clarkson this week to discuss the limited drama series. Inspired by the true story of Natalia Grace, A Good American Family tells the story of a Ukrainian orphan adopted by a Midwestern couple, Kristine and Michael Barnett, who later questioned her age and identity.

Pompeo has kept busy with her latest role, but she and Clarkson had some catching up to do with other topics. Their children attend school together, and after a quick check-in about mom life, Clarkson had to share her love of Boston with the Massachusetts native.

“I love the people, the energy of the people is very different from Texans,” said Clarkson.

While Clarkson seemed to be the Fenway Park fan, it was Pompeo who had one of her first jobs outside the iconic ball park.

Ellen Pompeo Used to Sell Slushies Outside Fenway Park

“I used to sell special slushies,” she said.

The young Pompeo would rinse out giant ketchup bottles, attach a pump, and fill it with vodka.

“I would have two types of slush and the giant bottle of vodka, and you could give people a ‘special slush’, and it was extra,” she said with a smirk.

Like a true Bostonian, Pompeo was a hustler and knew her clientele.

Her hustler mindset as a young adult no doubt helped her reach incredible heights with her acting career.
