Edgartown's Police Chief is stepping down after 30 years with the department.

The Vineyard Gazette says Chief Antone Bettencourt sent a letter to town officials saying that, after serving five years as chief, his last day would be May 2.

Bettencourt says he started with the department just a couple of weeks after turning 18 and that it was now time to just enjoy the later part of his life.

Arthur Smadbeck, chairman of the Board of Selectmen, says they will discuss Bettencourt's retirement at their meeting on Tuesday.

Smadbeck says they will likely hire an attorney who will make a recommendation to the board after interviewing members of the department.
