Drug Overdose Results in Car Accident in New Bedford

A New Bedford man is charged after apparently overdosing behind the wheel and rear-ending another car.

Police say they responded to an accident at Route 18 and Potomska street just before midnight Sunday, and found 31-year-old John Leighton behind the wheel showing signs of a drug overdose. Medics arrived and administered Narcan before taking Leighton to St. Luke's Hospital for treatment.

No other injuries were reported.

Leighton is charged with operating under the influence of drugs, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.
