Downtown New Bedford Buildings Evacuated After Gas Leak

NEW BEDFORD — Multiple buildings in downtown New Bedford, including City Hall and the Main Free Public Library, were evacuated this morning after a gas leak was detected.

The evacuations began at around 9:15 a.m. after workers inside City Hall detected a gaseous odor. Further investigation revealed that there was a gas leak nearby, prompting the evacuation of City Hall and several surrounding buildings.

Eversource crews responded to the leak, which was pinpointed to Sixth Street and Market Streets.

New Bedford Fire and Police Department personnel also responded to secure the scene surrounding the leak and maintain a safe perimeter.

New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell said road construction crews punctured a poorly marked and shallow gas main with a backhoe, causing the leak. "About half a dozen surrounding buildings were evacuated," said Mitchell.

City workers were given the all clear to re-enter City Hall at 10:20 a.m.
