Massachusetts prosecutors say they'll abandon their prosecution of a cousin of ex-New England Patriots player and convicted killer Aaron Hernandez because of her worsening cancer.

Tanya Singleton was charged with conspiracy to commit accessory after the fact in the 2013 killing of Odin Lloyd. Prosecutors accused her of helping Hernandez co-defendant Ernest Wallace flee to Florida.

Bristol County Deputy District Attorney William McCauley said in a court filing Thursday that her cancer has progressed despite aggressive therapies.

Singleton's lawyer, E. Peter Parker, says he persuaded prosecutors to dismiss the case due to her health.

Singleton, of Bristol, Connecticut, is halfway through a two-year probation sentence after she pleaded guilty to refusing to testify before a grand jury despite being granted immunity.

The judge spared her prison time last year because of her health.  (Associated Press)
