The Dighton Police Department recently welcomed its first-ever comfort dog, Oakie, and he has to be the cutest.

Oakie is an English Labrador Retriever and he has his work cut out for him.

The plan for Oakie is to have him spend most of his time at local schools, senior centers and assisted living facilities.

"Oakie will assist the Dighton Police Department with breaking down barriers between us (police) and the community, which will help us to further connect and establish meaningful relationships with our residents." Dighton school resource officer Stephen Hathaway said.

Oakie won't be hitting the road just yet. He will have to train at Professional Canine Services in Middleboro and pass a handful of puppy tests, including a dog handler test, as well as a canine good citizen test. Once Oakie passes, he will hit the streets.

Oakie isn't the first comfort animal in the area. He is in good company with neighboring town Somerset which has Raider and East Providence, which has Marty.

The Dighton Police have set up an online store. Proceeds from each sale will support all of Oakie's needs including food and vet care.

I don't know about you, but even though Oakie isn't officially on the clock just yet, he is already bringing smiles with all of his cuteness.
