WARNING: VIEWERS MAY FIND THIS VIDEO DISTURBING

NEW BEDFORD — A driver has been cited after striking two pedestrians on Shawmut Avenue this week.

The accident took place at around 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday as two pedestrians were crossing Shawmut Avenue at Coggeshall Street.

Dashcam video from another driver shows a white Chevrolet SUV that was headed west on Coggeshall Street stop at the intersection before proceeding south onto Shawmut Avenue. As the vehicle was making the turn it struck the two pedestrians head-on.

New Bedford Police say the driver of the Chevrolet told officers that they were stopped at their assigned stop sign and proceeded onto Shawmut Avenue but did not see the two people crossing the street.

The video shows the driver remaining at the scene and exiting the vehicle to check on the victims. Witnesses to the accident also rushed to the victims to offer assistance.

Police say the driver was cited for motor vehicle infractions. Spokesman Lt. Nathaniel Rodriguez did not specify what the citations were for.

New Bedford Police could not provide status updates on the two victims.

Arthur Motta, a spokesman for New Bedford Public Schools, said while he was aware of the accident, the pedestrians involved were not students of New Bedford Public Schools.
