PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Police in Providence have cited a Dartmouth man after he allegedly damaged the water fountain on Federal Hill with his car earlier this month.

The damage to the fountain in DePasquale Square was discovered on April 8. A portion of the fountain's wall had been knocked off of its foundation. The vehicle that caused the damage, a Honda Civic, had fled the scene leaving behind its front bumper and Massachusetts license plate.

On Friday, April 12, Kyle Smith, 21, of North Dartmouth, turned himself in to Providence Police in connection to the crash. Smith has been cited with several traffic violations including duty to give information and render aid, operating a motor vehicle without insurance, and a laned roadway violation.

Police say Smith's Honda Civic was stopped at the intersection of DePasquale and Atwells Avenues before it drove over a curb, hit a cement planter, and crashed into the fountain.

Officials are working to assess the damage to the fountain, which was already the target of a $47,500 restoration project.
