NEW BEDFORD — There will be a recount in the Ward One City Council race that saw just 13 votes separate second and third place candidates Daniel and Melissa Costa.

Melissa Costa ousted Daniel Costa (331 total votes) by just 13 votes (344 total votes) to move on to the November final election for Ward One City Councilor against incumbent Brad Markey, who finished as the clear frontrunner with 663 votes for 49.4 percent of the final tally.

There is no known relationship or personal connection between Melissa and Daniel Costa.

Sources close to City Hall tell WBSM’s Chris McCarthy that Daniel Costa has filed for a recount of the results of the race. That recount has been scheduled by the Elections Commission for Thursday at 6:00 p.m.

If the recall ends up in Daniel Costa’s favor, it would result in him replacing Melissa Costa’s spot to challenge Markey.
