Some city councilors called for more security cameras downtown at Tuesday night's Public Safety Committee meeting.

At-Large Councilor Debora Coelho called for the cameras in response to vandalism of the city's iconic Whaleman statue last year. Coelho said the cameras are useful in preventing crime and sought to dispel privacy concerns surrounding the devices.

Police Chief David Provencher said there are cameras downtown near City Hall, but declined to say exactly what they cover.
