The City Council is taking a look at how often the city hires applicants from outside New Bedford.

Ward Five Councilor Kerry Winterson filed two motions asking the Department of Labor Relations and Personnel to take a look at how often neighboring communities are hiring non-residents, and how many are currently employed in the Whaling City.

Winterson wants to make sure qualified residents aren't being shorted of city jobs.

Winterson also made it clear that if any changes were made to the city's hiring practices, there would be a grandfather clause for all current non-resident employees.
