The Cleveland Cavaliers announced Friday that star guard Kyrie Irving suffered a fractured left knee cap in Game 1 of the NBA Finals and will soon undergo surgery.

Irving, who was battling a lingering knee issue this postseason,
left Thursday's 108-100 loss to the Golden State Warriors during
overtime with the injury.

The timetable for Irving's return to the court is 3-to-4 months.

Initial tests on Irving's knee showed no damage to the ACL or MCL,
but he was seen leaving the locker room in crutches following the
game.

An MRI taken on Friday revealed the fractured knee cap. Cavaliers
head team physician Dr. Richard Parker will perform surgery on
Irving in the upcoming days.

Irving was averaging 19 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.8 assists over
35.7 minutes in 13 starts this postseason.

The 2011 No. 1 overall pick was selected to his third All-Star game
this season and averaged 21.7 points, 5.2 assists and 3.2 boards in
75 games. (Metro Networks Inc)
