The City of New Bedford is taking steps to improve conditions at the dam located at Turner's Pond off Plainville Road near the New Bedford-Dartmouth line.

The State Office of Dam Safety recently declared that area a hazard, and ordered New Bedford to take action.

Ron Labelle is the Commissioner for New Bedford's Department of Public Infrastructure. "That road surface through there is actually a dam, and you have to cut through the dam when you drive through. The Office of Dam Safety, because of the vegetation growing there, declared that area a hazard. We were directed to remove the vegetation, which we have done," said Labelle.

The next step says Labelle is to install a new guard rail, but before that can be done utility companies must reconfigure some underground cables in that area.

Labelle says he's working with the utilities to make it happen. He says drivers should be on the lookout for work crews when driving in that area.
