A significant display at City Hall in New Bedford had been vandalized earlier this month according to Mayor Jon Mitchell.

Speaking on his weekly radio program, Mitchell confirmed the domestic violence awareness display in front of City Hall, which consists of a tree strung with decorative lights, had been tampered with.

Mitchell says he's disappointed somebody would desecrate such a meaningful display.

Mitchell says the lights weren't lit at the tree lighting ceremony on October 8 because somebody had vandalized the lights. The Mayor's office has since purchased and re-strung more lights.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
