A New Bedford landmark may be struggling to stay open, and some City Councilors are looking to help. The Council passed two motions Thursday, asking its Ordinance Committee to meet with representatives from the Zeiterion Theater to discuss the growing problem that group is having with the upkeep of the facility. According to Councilor at Large Denis Lawrence, the group is spending money made from staging shows on the maintenance of the building. With federal and state grants drying up, Lawrence says the "Z" managment cant keep up with those costs, and still focus on its main task.

The Purchase Street theater is owned by the city, but managed by the Zeiterion Theater Group, which does not pay rent or taxes on the property. The group is asking the city to look at bringing in an outside management company to maintain the facility, a matter that will be raised at next month's Ordinance Committee meeting.
