Cargo Ship Detained By U.S. Marshals Off Fairhaven Coast
A Panamanian flag vessel destined for New Bedford from Casablanca is being detained by U.S. Marshals off the coast of Fairhaven.
Coast Guard Lieutenant Derek Gibson says the "Crown Opal" was carrying a large shipment of clementines nearly two weeks ago as the ship sailed through rough weather, which subsequently damaged a significant portion of the 2,000 tons of fruit.
Lt. Gibson tells WBSM News the Coast Guard responded to render emergency assistance upon the "Crown Opal's" arrival February 1.
Gibson says the vessel itself did not sustain any damage during transit, nor did any other of the ship's cargo.
The "Crown Opal" will be under detainment until a federal court order lifts restrictions. The order will not be delivered until it is determined if the vessel's insurance company or the shipping company will pay for the damaged cargo.
