FALL RIVER — One person has been confirmed dead as the result of a car crash that developed into a fire at an apartment complex in Fall River on New Year's Day.

Fall River Fire Department officials say a vehicle crashed into a section of the Four Winds apartment complex at 5500 North Main Street shortly after 10 a.m. on Tuesday.

The crash caused significant damage to the building's exterior, and ignited a large fire within the complex.

Firefighters have brought the fire under control.

One person, an elderly woman, has been confirmed dead. It's unclear if she was the driver of the car or a resident in the building. A medflight was also requested for two victims.
