Rally cries filled the front steps of New Bedford City Hall Tuesday afternoon calling for more night time bus service.

Local advocacy group Bus Riders United wants the Southeastern Regional Transit Authority to continue running later buses after May 31st. This rally was one of two rallies Tuesday. The other was held at the Fall River City Hall.

Rachel Mulroy is a member of BRU and says these rallies are the first step to getting the bus services this area needs.

SRTA began running buses until 9 pm last April on all routes.

BRU members say the buses help students attend night classes and will help people enjoy longer summer days.

Mayor Jon Mitchell spoke briefly about his support for the night service.

The group is also asking SRTA to start a Sunday bus service.
