Boston Designer’s Signature Sparkle Catches Eyes of A-Listers
The sparkle and shine of a Mel the Clothing piece has caught the attention of many, including some famous faces.
Cape Cod native turned Boston-based designer Melissa Stern has always marched to the beat of her own drum when it comes to fashion.
"I thought I'd own a boutique. I loved Betsy Johnson growing up," Stern said.
Her passion for fashion carried over into sports, finding it hard to locate a piece that expressed her fandom while remaining stylish at the same time.
Sparking the Idea For Sparkle
"I was always a Boston sports fan and I starting toying with the idea of designing my own pieces. I went to an event and wore something I just threw together and women started asking where I got it," Stern recalled.
So she got to work and started making designs featuring lots of glitz and glam.

She loves sequins and her pieces are evidence of that. They've even been spotted in the one store she once spent many a gameday searching through: the Boston Pro Shop.
"My friend had a contact and she, the person at the Garden, has been so supportive of getting women and local business owners and she took a chance on me in the fall and it's a 'pinch me' thing to be there," Stern said.

Designing for Celebrities and Pro Athletes
Not only are Boston fans clamoring for an Insta-worthy top, Mel the Clothing has been featured on a slew of famous faces and their families.
"I've done stuff for a lot of Boston athletes' families," Stern said. A true honor for a Boston fan.
"I did jackets for Tom Brady's family for the Hall of Fame induction last June, Al Horford's wife and kids, I've done sequined shirts for the Celtics games and the Marchand family I've done different sequined outfits and jackets for them and some stuff for the Four Nations Tournament," Stern said.
She designed looks for the daughters of David Pastrnak and Patrick Mahomes. Dave Portnoy and his dog have even worn the signature sparkle. One of the biggest names to don her looks recently is Nikki Glaser.
