MBTA fares are on the way up.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation's board of directors voted Wednesday to increase the price of bus, subway, and commuter rail passes.

The fare increases, first announced in March, will take effect July 1.

The price of bus and subway tickets will rise by 10 cents, increasing to $1.60 and $2.10 respectively.

The price of a combined bus-and-subway monthly pass will increase by $5 to $75, and a monthly bus pass will jump $2 to $50 per month. Commuter rail rates will also change.

Officials estimate the fare hikes will cause ridership to decline by less than 1 percent.

Also Wednesday, the board voted to approve the purchase of 40 new buses and to award a contract to build 24 new Green Line cars.
