Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Massachusetts is on a mission, attempting to recruit more men to serve as mentors for pre-teen boys.

Senior Program Coordinator Chelsy Baker and Community Engagement Specialist Kimberly Rioux-Barros stopped by Townsquare Sunday this week to explain what "Bigs" do, and how men can get involved.

"We're trying to provide positive role models for kids in our community," Rioux-Barros said. "It's all about building self-confidence, building self-esteem, helping kids make decisions in their lives."

The Crucial Need for New Bedford Youth Mentors

Big Brothers Big Sisters in Eastern Massachusetts currently serves over 4,000 children, and according to Baker, the numbers are growing.

"We currently have 75 matches in the New Bedford region, and we're hoping to see that number grow in the next year," she said. "Mentorship, as far as we're concerned, is about friendship first. You are not there to be a teacher, or parent, or guidance counselor. It's about having fun."

"There are more than 100 kids on our wait list, so there is a significant need for mentors right now," Baker said.

Understanding the Time Commitment and Staff Support

The time commitment is six hours per month, and Baker said there will be plenty of support. "There is a whole team of staff members who will work with you," she said. "So if you are having a hard time coming up with things to do, or there are conflicts, your support team will work with you, your 'Little,' and the family to resolve issues."

Is It Harder to Recruit Men Than Women?

"Typically, yes," Rioux-Barros said. "It's a challenge that we face along with other organizations in the area. I think it really comes down to making men feel comfortable, and providing them with full and direct clear answers as to what the program is."

The Qualifications to Be a Big Brother or Big Sister

"We like to keep it simple," Rioux-Barros said. "'Eighteen years or older, transportation, easy and willing' is what we like to say."

Those interested must fill out a brief online application, undergo a background check, and follow safety guidelines. The application and more information are available at

"I think mentorship is key," Rioux-Barros said. "It's taking kids out of their shell, out of their routine, and exposing them to a new way of thinking, and that is where it can be transforming for both the 'Big' and the 'Little.'"
