Much to the joy of many local business owners, internet retail giant Amazon will start collecting sales tax on purchases made in Massachusetts in the New Year.

Amazon.com started out as a place to buy books at a discount rate, but in recent years it has been the place to go for just about everything.

According to the The Herald News, many local businesses and city Mayors had been pushing for this. Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick made the official announcement this morning in a press release, saying:

I value the contributions large and small employers alike make to Massachusetts’ economic vitality, and this agreement captures that.

Amazon is set start collecting sales tax on online purchases in November 2013.
