Acushnet Event Will Get Your Child Started in Junior Dog Handling

Does your child have a full-hearted love of dogs?

On Saturday, January 28, parents, grandparents and children ages 7 to 17 are invited to a free information session that will give young people a glimpse into the local world of dog sports.

"Yes, but before they get to Westminster, the Wampanoag Kennel Club would like to teach and guide your child how to take the lead as a free service to our area communities from the Wampanoag Kennel Club," said Kathleen DeCampos, retired from the Dartmouth Public Schools and originator of the proposal to the kennel club's board of directors.

DeCampos explained that "a lot of children love their dogs."

"There's a real bond between them. The world of dog sports is very fulfilling for the dog and child and builds confidence because your child is the alpha role, as your canine is taught to obey," she said.

DeCampos said the kids will bond more deeply, and they'll discover new, fun activities to do with their dog – whether you have a pure bred or a mixed breed dog.

"It's a great sport for young people, only most parents are not aware of this," DeCampos said.

Interested families should call (774) 263-7251 to reserve your seats because space is limited. It will be held at the Acushnet Grange, located at 1121 Main Street, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 28.

"This information session is for humans only. For this one gathering, please leave your dog at home," DeCampos said.
