Wareham Sex Offender Arrested

Wareham Police have arrested a Level 3 sex offender after he allegedly tried to rape a woman early Thursday morning.

According to police, the female victim reported she was with 23-year-old Joseph Gomes at his Apple Street home around 2am, when he made aggressive sexual advances toward her, and tried to prevent her from leaving his home.

The unnamed woman was able to escape and reported the incident to police.

Police obtained a warrant and arrested Gomes around 6am.

Gomes, a Level 3 sex offender, has been charged with kidnapping, assault to rape, and assault and battery. Firearms charges are also being filed after a search of his apartment turned up ammunition and a large capacity feeding device.

Gomes is being held without bail and will be arraigned in Wareham Fourth District Court.
