Jimmy Buffett did it with Alan Jackson and then u um and then after that I think Buffett did a recording of it on his own. But um in any event, you know, one of the things about being the old guy in the building is every now and then the young guys come up to you and say, "Hey, do you remember when? Do you remember this? That's just the >> That was a promotion that was done at the place in Hyannis, >> but you can upgrade your suite for the Cuddles and Bubbles package. It was a package. That's what it was, >> which was essentially it was a a motel in Hyannis and they had a hot tub in there, >> which is now the Hyannis Plaza Hotel. That's what it's called. Now, they are cashing in on this Cuddles and Bubbles. If you go to their website, there's like a banner that goes right across the top. Cuddles and Bubbles. Cuddles and Bubbles. Wow. >> With throwback videos from the 70s that'll make you cringe. >> I mean, the wallpaper is speaks for itself. But, um, you know, I was shocked, Barry, to see how many people just put it out there that, yeah, hey, I've been here before. Well, you know what it was back in the day when when Cuddles and Bubbles was was really hot down there. Now, this would have been the late 70s and the early 80s. Now, I was working in local radio at the time and every radio station in our area >> had a a deal with them >> and they gave away Cuddles and Bubbles gift certificates. >> Marketing genius. Just saying. >> It was great marketing and you know what, the people loved it. It was something that people really wanted and they fought for it. So, um, so that's how that that's why so many people around here know Cuddles and Bubbles cuz every station probably BSM Fun 107 wasn't on the air then. But, uh, >> no, we were we gave away. So, this is more towards the 80s and even 90s or uh, no late late ' 80s. Um, >> I moved out of town in the 80s, so I kind of lost track of what was going on. >> B07 was all about this. I mean, guaranteed around here, if you're listening and you've been to Cuddles and Bubbles, we sent you to the international inn. we have, which is what it's was called. Uh, thank you, Kyle. And we would we would really generate some serious business for them. >> Yep. >> You know, regardless, I I just people would spend their honeymoon there. >> Yep. >> This was the local Jamaica, the Puerto Rican Express. Like, we're No, no. I'm talking about like, you know, a lot of people now in 2025, they're having their honeymoon in Puerto Rico. They're having their honeymoon in the Caribbean. They're having their honeymoon. No, summer warm. Now, I guess Cape Cod in the summer, sure. But nothing screams or speaks to me that says, "You know what? I'm going to go down to a hotel that's got a heart-shaped hot tub in mirrors on the ceiling. It's just >> I mean, this screamed of like noel motel, you know, poconos kind of stuff." >> Exactly. [laughter] >> But people loved it. It was a free they, you know, they gave them away on the station and people took them and went there. A lot of people, now I will admit to you, I've never been there. >> I got married the first time early 1980s, so I had a house, you know, I was no kids, so I didn't need to go to Cuddles and Bubbles. We did our own Cuddles and Bubbles at home. So >> that's what people did. That's >> But I mean, it was a very popular thing. And Daniel Webster in was huge back then down around there. And people would go to we' all the radio stations would give away uh gift certificates for that as well. So, um, so now when you started to put this out on social media and on the air about Cuddles and Bubbles, a lot of people reacted. Probably caught you by surprise that many memories that people have. >> Two things caught me by surprise. One, just how how open people were to put it out there and they would tell in full description and story their experience. I don't need to know that. But one thing, the second thing that kept coming up was that there was something similar and I'm quoting here in New Bedford on Brock A perhaps if I'm going to give you like a location next to the the Taylor School which is in the very south again and I call the peninsula of New Bedford. I've looked on Google Maps to see if there was any kind of building, you know, of stature and size to host a hotel or a motel. Uh, and it's just it's just neighborhoods, just houses. >> So, essentially, you came to me and you wanted to know in my time when I was younger, do I ever remember that being there, >> of course. >> And I got to tell you, I don't I have no memory of that at all. And I mean, I was born in the city. I grew up in the city. I left the city for, I don't know, about 10 years, went on the road and came back. But I don't have any memory at all of any kind of a motel, let alone a Cubbles and Bubbles. A cuddle and bubble. Now, we were kind of joking off air and and I mean, look, you know, there no secrets here, right? Um, Brock Avenue had some fairly reputable addresses, >> suggestive of people as well. >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So, so I don't know whether people were kind of joking about that, but you know what what Gazelle's looking to find out, and you guys are great for this stuff. Um, was there ever a cuddles in bubbles? Look at the lines are lighting up like crazy. Was there ever cuddles and bubbles uh that you folks can remember on Brock Avenue or even a motel for that matter on Brock Avenue >> of the same kind of idea? You know, the the same marketing technique. Hey, come on down. Let's call even if it's an Airbnb, but we have the lux the luxury of, you know, maybe there's a a hot tub in the room or something like that. >> But we didn't have Airbnb back then. But after a while, because it was so big, they opened this place and I remember it was right near the Swansea Mall. Right as you go to get onto the highway, that hotel started opening up just >> Oh, I remember that motel. Yeah. But what what about down the south end of New Bedford though? Do you >> Yeah, that was a quality. >> Wait, this is this is what I'm saying, though. They were just opening up a room with a hot tub that you could rent for an hour and then leave. If it wasn't a hotel, was this an apartment complex? I've lived on Brock Avenue 43 years. So, the place you're talking about was on the corner of Frederick and Brock Avenue. It's a a white house. The building's still there. Uh, now it's just a house. And it had like I think at one point it was like a hairdresser and then they took a couple of rooms and put some tubs in them. I don't I I was too young so I don't know how the renting of it went. I don't know if it was by hour or what. Like the last caller had said that. I don't remember. That's where it was. And when I was a kid, >> my parents used to take off and go to Cull and Bubble [laughter] Hyenas and they loved it. They used to go to Petown and all like that. So anyway, last year um my wife and I, she for my birthday in April, I said, "I want to go and see." So we went >> um it really wasn't bad. They were working on the um on like the vestibule when you walk in. Now it was off season because it was in April. Um, so Hyannis was kind of dead, which was okay. I had no issues. But yeah, the room was clean. The tub was clean. No issues. Had a good time. >> Down in Brock A. Did you say it was on the corner of Abe and Brock A? What did you say? >> No, that's my name is Abe. >> It was on the corner of Frederick and Brock Avenue. Right on. >> Frederick and Brock Avenue. >> Yes. That's down. Now I believe you because one person had commented saying it's somewhere near the Taylor school. They had a sign and the whole field when I was a kid and went to Roosevelt cuz I >> Do do you remember the name of it? You said it had a sign. Do you recall what the sign said? >> It was something like cuddle and bubbles something to that effect. He doesn't know it yet, but yeah, we're going to get a rotisserie chicken and we're going to eat it in the hot tub. >> I went out and bought a new bathing suit just for the occasion. I'm talking about Hold on. Hold on. I got I got a just got a text message here from city councel to Brian Gomes and he's been in for office for a long time. Brian knows this out then. He says, "Barry, that gentleman is correct. It was located at the corner of Frederick and Brock Avenue and it was called Cuddles and Bubbles." And that's a quote right there from city councelor Brian Gums. >> Brian, you know, I I mean, I'm good friends with Brian. And uh thank you very much. I mean, this is one of those things that itches your brain cuz if you try to remember, I'm too young for it. All right. I I'm 38 years old, which, you know, I'm in the middle. I'm in the middle. And I've only moved to New Bedford. I've been in and out. So, I I've lived in the West five years. I'm a Westport kid, but I've lived >> They they don't do cuddles and bubbles in West Point. only with the cows and cows out there. >> Yeah, cuddles and cows and plows and pigs. But anyway, it's, you know, I love New Bedford. It's so eccentric. It's so colorful. And I love that they It's people are so open to have these businesses called Cuddles and Bubbles. I mean, listen, it's just so blunt. It's amazing. I love it. >> I would like to know from Councelor Gomes, if you're still listening, Councelor Gomes, was was this legal? Um, I mean, do do they have to have a license for this or can I open a Cuddles and Bubbles in New Bedford if I wanted to? I mean, Gazelle lives in New Bedford. Tim, you live in New Bedford. Can you just throw a couple of jacuzzi's in and start renting them out to people? Is that >> You don't even need to buy a real jacuzzi anymore. They have like inflatable jacuzzi you can buy. >> They do. >> So, you don't even need permanent space. Actually, uh, uh, Matthew Marco, who was running for for, uh, city council, he has a business where they bring saunas to people's yards. So, you know, we could we could go get a couple of these inflatable jacuzzi's. >> I'll DJ. >> Yeah. You can play the music. >> I'm thinking like 1970s R&B. >> And we'll get a tent, too, just so people can have a little bit of privacy. >> Oh, black tent. Absolutely. Yeah. A little disco music from the late '7s summer, whatever, you know. Now, I my son, we went to visit my son in Arizona one time and he said, "Oh, don't worry. I got your room. Our apartment is way too small. You can't, you know, we can't all fit here. So, we got you a room in this nice uh little place. It's a cheap motel, but it's nice. You like So, we went into the motel and it had a jacuzzi in there. And the jacuzzi was like right next to the bed. I mean, literally right next to the bed. It was so hot in that room. The wallpaper was peeling off and it was just I don't know how the hell we slept in that room that night. It was just uh >> scorcher. >> Yeah. So, I I can't imagine now if you have a cuddles and bubbles with uh you know, with [snorts] this kind of situation, does it make the room hot? When my son was younger, we used to do for school vacation week, we'd take him to there was a place uh in Felmouth uh the inn on the square and they had one suite that had a jacuzzi in it. And we used to, you know, if he was good and he got good grades and everything, school vacation week, we'd for a night or two, we'd rent that room and he could go hang out in the jacuzzi. And we liked it because it was, like you said, it's right there in the room. It's not in the bathroom. It's right next to the bed. So if he wanted to sit in there, we could sit on the bed and kind of watch TV and hang out and we knew he was safe. So he loved that. I mean, we would do that all the time. And he would stay in there for a day or two and come out all wrinkled. We'd have to [laughter] iron him out before we took him home. >> That was in the pool. >> We stayed at a place called the the Stone Hill Inn in Stow, Vermont. Now, if you guys are looking for a nice >> I know exactly where that is. >> Oh my gosh. >> I know exactly where that is. Beautiful. >> Last year we were there. We went in October for the the foliage and all of that. And they have the um a cuddles and bubbles kind of thing, but it's it's like the bathroom has the jacuzzi in it where like where the tub would be and then you have a fireplace that opens on both the bedroom and on the bathroom. And that was totally incredible. That was really I would highly recommend it. >> But you know, if we are going to open up our own cuddles and bubbles, we have to go with the OG mirrored ceiling. You got to have the mirrors on the ceil otherwise it doesn't I mean it takes away from the experience. Now I got to say I've never been in a room in a room with a mirrored ceiling before but I can just imagine just unspeakable visions. >> Well, you got to have a water bed, too, if you're going to have a mirrored ceiling. >> You have you have a dirty mind though. Mirror on the ceiling is just to help you part your hair right when you're [laughter] coming. >> I I suppose I >> make sure the sheets are straight. You know cap is on correctly. Yeah. >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. >> Now, Tim, you might you might be old enough to remember water beds. I don't know about you. Do you remember? >> I had a water bed as a kid. I I want to say I was like five or six years old. So, yeah, I I do remember. I remember just how impossible it was to get out. Um and you know, it's like >> got to bounce your way out. >> You bounce. But the border, right, that that kind of held it in there. It was like it was rock solid. So, you hit your knee on that. You hit your ankle, your shin, and oh, you felt it for days. But you know, whoever came up with a water bed, it's not as, how do I put this? It's Everybody thinks, "Oh, this is going to be a great idea. Honey, let's go get a water bed until you actually tried a water bed, if you know what I mean." >> Yep. Yep. Yep. That's why they're not available anymore. >> Yeah. I mean, >> my mom my mom had one when I was a kid, and it popped a leak many times. This thing had duct tape all over it >> by the time we moved for the third or fourth time with it. They were they were not very good. And also, if you're a parent and you had kids in the 80s and you bought a water bed and you thought the kids didn't know what was going on in the bedroom after you went in there, we could all hear it. >> You can hear it. Yeah. Squish, squish, squish, squish. Well, you know, back in back in the 70s and there was a van craze. Everybody had vans, right? Chevy vans and whatever. And you had to, you know, you had to soup out the van inside and you had chandeliers and you had all kinds of bars and all kinds of crazy stuff in the van. And a lot of people would put water beds in their van. And I can only imagine how heavy that made the van. They have a water bed in there. I mean, even a regular bed would would add some weight. >> I thought you fill it once you get into the room, though. It doesn't come completely filled, right? No, but once you put >> But once you put it in the van that in the van and then you fill it with water, you're going to be >> and your tires are like >> Yeah. sink in the van. >> Ready to um All right. I took off, hit the road, and kind of lost um kind of lost track of a lot of what was going on around here, but apparently Cuddles and Bubbles was still pretty good uh or pretty big going on through the 80s and into the 90s. I guess it's still uh so a lot of you folks um apparently took advantage of this thing and really had a good time and and the responses on the WBSM and Fun 107 um uh websites to all of this is is incredible. And um the the um Yeah. the tub, [laughter] the bed, the mirror still. So ridiculously funny. When I think about that, it's like >> So, was it like totally cheesy or what? >> Yeah. [laughter] >> Everything you'd imagine it would be, right? >> Oh, very. So cheesy. I mean, if I was to do that today, I would be wicked embarrassed. [laughter] It's like what? And the jacuzzi like what? It's the hot shape. Why would you get in there? I don't know how clean it is. [laughter] You don't know what kind of germs you're getting. So, no. And I'm such a OCD person. He knew it wasn't going to go well. um you know with that pub thingy but yeah it was it was fun in the way but never I the two weren't associated the hot dog which I was not associated when I did go to our hyenas and have that [clears throat] adventure but how fun for them you know the dogs got their thing and now for the hot dogs um that's kind of good that they got their own story right >> yep yep yep you know back in the day when you're younger and everything and you're adventurous You don't even think about anything, right? You just think about this is going to be fun. But it doesn't sound like the kind of place that you'd go for a week, right? Probably a few hours. I don't know. Um, my stepbrother, he is uh he meet he he's too young, but he is he's in a nursing home. He was in a place where you're not sick enough to be in a nursing home and too well to be anywhere else. So the place he was in in Boston, um he's had situ a problem with it and he wants to come down here which I love because I've always took care of him. Anyways, I would love for him to be down here. What if the city councilman Gary I think helps people out? is a hope house or a house of something of that nature that helps people where they're not and he's not a drug addict, nothing like that. He just needs, like I said, he's too >> I got to tell you, I've got a relative uh also in a um in in what they call a rest home. And um I can recall trying to make arrangements and and so on and so forth. And I was told that that person could be put like 2 hours from here because there just is such a shortage of space and such a huge amount of demand for it. Now, as luck had it, um like 2 days before this person was going to be on literally on the street, um one of the area places came in and and and had it just happened to have an opening and swept him up and so he's been u but I don't know whether politics or politicians could would would be able to do that. >> One of the city councilman works with people in that. I'm not to be honest with you. I'm not sure. I don't know. >> You're not sure? Yeah. >> Yeah. I don't I really don't know what most of the counselors do during the day. >> Yeah. So, if any counselors are listening that that that do as you suggest, you know, uh they work in that that field and they might have some information for you. His overweight brought him into a lot of medical problems. And I I mean he was always active, this and that. And then bam, all of a sudden Aphib this and that like a bunch of stuff, right? But not nothing's so bad that it can't be managed. But the thing is is like what where I live coming up on the third floor is challenging. Um but at the same time, so we're like, okay. So he ends up in a place um that place right outside of uh uh Bunker Hill >> he was staying in. But then they decided because he went in the hospital two times within two months being there, they're like, "Oh, you got too many medical issues. We don't want you back." Which isn't fair. And his medical issues are nothing more than anybody else would have honestly. Um, but here's the thing. So, here we are. He's too healthy to be in a nursing home, but not sick enough, you know, like he's I don't know. He's in between. So the big problem is is really with his weight, right? >> No. Well, his weight has dropped. He's dropped >> Yeah, he's dropped his weight while being in there over the year. Um, >> is there any reason why he can't he can't be employed? >> No, he he's got so many medical conditions that he could never work again. No, >> never. And he was a big He he did our roads. He did all kinds of work. Um, Barry, I'm very proud of my stepb brotherther, but unfortunately with his heart and his breathing, it's just like, you know, it's just it is what it is for him at such a young age. I feel bad. But here's the thing. I can't have a but I know, like everybody knows, the state knows he's too young to be in a nursing home obviously, but he's too sick to live on his own, >> right? And and I can't have him Barry because of the I would I would take I would have him come live with me but to come up these steps and down. Nope. He he his legs his everything. Um >> well it sounds as though um you you know you're in a position anyway >> well enough and he's really fun. He's a good person. He's motivated. He's just he's everything that you would want in a human being. He but he just needs to be in a certain place. Right. But at this point in your life, you should not feel obligated to take on that responsibility either. I mean, that's a a huge responsibility. >> But if not me, then who, Barry? Then who? So, I'm just wondering. I mean, he's got such a joial personality. He he he belongs in this one particular place and he's got the Marley. They can have them, you know, the state, whatever. I know one of the city councilors help. >> Well, do I'll tell you what. Do this. The beginning of the month, beginning of the week, they didn't hear about I called in.
