Here in Massachusetts, more than 130 cities including Arlington, Amherst, Cambridge, Brookline, Marblehead, Great Barrington, Northampton, Provincetown, Somerville, and Salem also celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

Indigenous people and other activists calling for the state to rename Columbus Day got support in their push Tuesday from some Italian-Americans who said they, too, think Massachusetts should make the change.

People who vilify Columbus Day are being unfair and biased. In addition, they're insulting the Italian-American community and the Catholic faith.

It's unfortunate to see a once unifying figure, who defined courage and religiosity, is in the crosshairs of destruction, petitions and disinformation.
