New Bedford Police say more than $100,000 worth of heroin was taken off the street following an arrest on Saturday.

Police say surveillance was set up as part of an investigation targeting drug trafficking in the city.

During the course of the investigation officers approached a vehicle as it neared the intersection of Shawmut Ave. and Hathaway Blvd. around 2:35 p.m.

The driver, 37-year-old Richard Aybar of Cranston, R.I., was asked to exit the vehicle and police found a wrapped package protruding from his waistband.

It was later determined that the package contained roughly 1,174 grams of heroin.
