This Portsmouth, RI Garden Has Over 80 Life-sized Animals & Figurines
Pack the car and grab your friends (or kids) because this garden...yes, a garden...is road trip worthy. America's oldest topiary garden has over 80 life-sized animals and figurines, and they are wicked cool.
According to a Boston Uncovered article, the 7-acre property overlooking the bay was purchased in 1872. Transformed into a garden from 1905 to 1945, the Green Animals Topiary Garden is the oldest of its kind in the country.
Green Animals Topiary Garden, Portsmouth, RI
If you think walking through a garden would be "boring..." think again. One could spend hours in awe at the perfect sculpting that goes into maintaining these plant figures.
Most of the animals are lifesized - so you will have to stare up to look at the giraffe and elephant in the face.
Located at 380 Corys Ln, Portsmouth, RI 02871, the Green Animals Topiary Garden is only a little over a 2-hour drive from Portsmouth, NH. Absolutely worth the drive!
The garden is found on the same property as the Newport, Rhode Island, mansions: The Breakers. You have to buy tickets to the mansions in order to get access to the garden.
According to the website, you have to purchase specific tickets: "The Breakers +1 or +2".
That means, you get access to "The Breakers, and general admission to one other open property of your choosing: The Elms, Marble House, Rosecliff, Chateau-sur-Mer, Kingscote, Isaac Bell House, or Green Animals Topiary Garden-Grounds Only."
If you only purchase tickets to "The Breakers," you will not be able to access the 80 life-sized sculpture garden.
