I remember going trick-or-treating as a kid. As I got older and was allowed to go out alone, I became savvier and even started laying out game plans with my neighborhood friends. We had curfews, so we had to make sure our routes were efficient. No point in walking up big hills to get the cheap candies from the old lady in the creepy house.

Instead, we knew which houses made it worth our while. In fact, I grew up not far from the owner of Market Basket. Trust me, you made time to visit the DeMoulas family home. They had the king-sized bars, and their outdoor decorations—complete with inflatables and an audio/visual show—were something straight out of Disney.

Those were the great houses.

Then, there were the houses that felt the need to hand out things that were just...weird. Now, I don’t mean that they couldn’t afford to give out the good candy. I mean they woke up and chose to give something unusual to trick-or-treaters. Occasionally, the creativity paid off. For example, no one was mad when you got a certificate for a free Frosty from Wendy’s or a free fries coupon at McDonald’s. But did the neighborhood dentist really have to hand out toothbrushes to kids? When you think about it, handing out caramel-filled Twix bars would have been much better for business.

We had the SouthCoast sound off about some of the "odd" things they received while trick-or-treating. As usual, the Fun 107 audience did not disappoint.
