Fairhaven Hopes To Keep Paul Revere Bell
Some residents of Fairhaven want to make sure that a bell cast in Paul Revere's foundry more than 200 years ago stays in town.
According to an official town history, the bell was bought for the Meeting House Congregational Church in 1796.
It's been in the tower of the Oxford School since 1960. But the town may sell the school.
John Medeiros, a member of the sales study committee, tells The Standard-Times he wants to make sure the town retains control of the bell by removing it, if Oxford is demolished.
If a developer wants to include the bell in any reuse of the building, he wants the new owners to refurbish it.
Selectman Charles Murphy Sr. says the board has no plans to include the bell in the sale.
