New snow plows, fire engines, ambulances and a rapid response rescue boat have all been purchased or acquired by the City of New Bedford during the last year.

Some of the vehicles were on display Thursday during a press event in the South End.

Mayor Jon Mitchell credits City Fnancial Officer Ari Skye for doing the research necessary to find cost-effective ways for the city to upgrade its fleet.

In some cases, the city has acquired surplus equipment from the Federal goverment, refurbished it at low cost, and then put it on the road.

Fire Cheif Michael Gomes says that's the case with Engine 25, which was acquired from the Air Force.

Chief Gomes says the city spent about $6,000 to get it on the road, far less than the estimated $500,000 for a new fire truck.
