The Fairhaven Fire Department was called to the scene of a Sunday afternoon boat fire.

Firefighter Wayne Oliveira says that at 2:18 p.m. they received a 9-1-1 call from the Steamship Authority Repair Facility at 14 Main St. about a fire on board the 255-foot ferry “Island Home.”

The fire was in a generator room and workers on the vessel put out the initial fire using a CO2 extinguisher and fire crews were on scene for one hour and were able to prevent it from spreading to other areas of the boat.

It's believed the fire may have begun in the electrical wiring that supplies the generator.

No injuries were reported and since the ship was in dock for routine repairs there were no passengers on board.

A damage estimate wasn't initially available.

Oliveira says notifications were sent to The Fairhaven Harbormaster, US Coast Guard and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection.
