One man is in stable condition at an area hospital while another is behind bars following a stabbing in New Bedford.

According to police, the incident occurred just after midnight early Monday morning when the 26-year-old victim refused to let his sister's boyfriend use his scooter. An argument ensued and resulted in the victim being stabbed in the abdomen with a six-inch knife.

After an investigation, officers located 22-year-old William Mendez-Rodriguez in the Shawmut Village housing development in the West End. He has been charged with armed assault with intent to murder and assault and battery and is being arraigned Monday in New Bedford District Court.

The unidentified victim is recovering from surgery in Rhode Island Hospital, where he's listed in stable condition.
