TAUNTON - Taunton Police have arrested a woman after a drunken crash and a more-than-bizarre investigation.

On their Facebook page, Taunton Police say they were called to the scene of a crash in the area of 501 Staple Street early Monday afternoon, where a 1999 Mercedes sedan had crashed off the road in a wooded area. Preliminary investigation determined that the vehicle had been travelling at a high rate of speed when it left the road, striking several mailboxes, and coming to rest in the wooded area.

Police say the driver, 39-year-old Amy Rebello-McCarthy, a Newton resident formerly of Taunton, was slurring her words and drooling as she was questioned by police.

A male passenger, 22-year-old Marvin Kyewalyanga of Waltham, was found to be in possession of what appeared to be a semi-automatic handgun. The weapon turned out to be an Airsoft pistol.

Both parties were placed into police custody.

Before they were transported, Rebello-McCarthy informed officers that she was in possession of a bearded dragon lizard, which she had tucked into her bra. Police took possession of the reptile and handed it over to Taunton Animal Control.

Rebello-McCarthy is charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of liquor, driving to endanger, and marked lane violation.

Kyewalyanga was placed in protective custody.
