The New Bedford Whaling Museum received a $25,000 grant from the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation to publish "The Art of the Yankee Whale Hunt" by the museum's senior maritime historian Michael Dyer.

According to South Coast Today.com, the book ties together the maritime culture of Long Island and New England and draws on the museum's large collection of whaling logbooks, journals and manuscripts from the whaling industry in the 19th century.

"The Art of the Yankee Whale Hunt" will highlight the essence of whaling, the vessels used in it, its culture, the geographical locales of where it took place.

The publication date is scheduled for spring 2017.

Established in 1987, the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation supports the study of the history on New York, with an emphasis on Suffolk County.
