The Whaling City got a visit from one of its namesakes.

New Bedford Assistant Harbormaster Brian Joseph says what's believed to be a humpback whale, was first reported Saturday near the Hurricane Barrier and has been moving around quite a bit during his stay in New Bedford.
"He was outside the barrier most of the day, he was inside the barrier Sunday, floating around in the harbor, and then transferred out to the Hurricane Barrier Sunday, about 11 o'clock, and has been outside the barrier between here and Fort Taber for the last day or two swimming back and forth freely," said Joseph.
Joseph says some of the best views of the whale were to be found near the hurricane barrier.
"He does swim alongside the barrier at times and you could possibly get a sighting from that," said Joseph.
It was not advised that you get any closer as it could be a danger for both yourself and the whale.
Joseph says alerts have been sent out to boaters in the area alerting them of the whale's presence.
