WESTPORT — Westport Police have arrested a man they say was seen stealing large, decorative stones from the retaining wall of Baker's Beach earlier this week.

Police say over the course of several nights, multiple decorative stones had been pried from the stone retaining wall on the property. The value of the stones is estimated to be $1,200.

After being caught in the act on surveillance video, police say they observed a man and a vehicle matching the description in the video had returned early Thursday morning to the stone wall.

Police questioned the man, David McCarthy, 54, of 1 Sandy Lane, Assonet, who readily admitted that he was the man in the video seen stealing the large stones. McCarthy allegedly told police he was using the stones to make a koi pond at his home. He opened the trunk of his 2018 Volkswagen Passat and revealed two stolen stones.

Police arrested McCarthy and charged him with malicious destruction of property and larceny.
