It took Westport firefighters about an hour to bring a garage type structure fire under control early Tuesday morning at 212 American Legion Highway. Firefighters found heavy smoke and fire coming from the one story wood frame building. Cold weather and the lack of hydrants in the area hampered firefighters in battling the blaze. Mutual aid was called in from Tiverton, Little Compton and Dartmouth Districts 2 & 3. Half the building was saved and Westport Police and Fire are investigating the cause and origin of the fire. There's no damage cost estimate.
