The State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating a fatal fire late Saturday night in Westport that took the life of a four-year old boy.

According to broadcast reports, fire crews were called to 9 Mt. Pleasant St. in Westport just before 11pm, and observed flames coming from both the first and second floors.

Firefighters found the body of a four year old boy in a second floor bedroom.

Two other occupants were able to escape the flames.  They were transported to area hospitals suffering from burns and smoke inhalation.  A third person was also injured while attempting to rescue the child. A firefighter was also treated for smoke inhalation.

Mutual aid assistance came from Fall River, Little Compton, Tiverton and Dartmouth Fire Departments.

According to Westport Fire officials, the home was the site of another fatal fire in November, 1952, when nine members of the Audette family were killed.
