UPDATE (2:38 p.m.): The lockdown order has been lifted. Normal classes and campus activities are now resuming. State Police say the threat turned out to be unfounded.

WESTFIELD — Westfield State University is currently under lockdown as authorities search for a suspicious man.

Massachusetts State Police say troopers responded to the campus to assist campus police on a report of a suspicous man. He is described as a white male in a trench coat, with a backpack and possibly body armor.

The search is underway as the campus has been placed on lockdown, and authorities sweep the campus searching for the suspect. They are also interviewing the sole witness who reported the suspect, and stress the information is not confirmed as accurate.

The school has asked anyone on campus to remain in place, and for visitors and commuters to refrain from attempting to get on campus.

State Police are asking anyone else who may have seen the suspicious man to contact them at 9-1-1 or contact campus police.
