New Bedford Police have arrested two male juveniles and an adult female in connection with a shooting incident Monday afternoon in the city's West End.  The shootings happened around 2pm, and prompted school officials to order a lockdown at Carney Acadamy as a precaution.

Lt. John Chaves tells WBSM News, words were exchanged at New Bedford District Court by two groups of people.  The groups disbursed, but as one group began heading west on Kempton St., near County, shots rang out from a car passing by.

According to Lt. Chaves, the car then drove into Temple Landing, and shots were fired from inside the development, in apparent retaliation for the first shooting.  The car then left the scene and was stopped by members of the Police Department's Gang Unit.

Chaves says two young males and an adult woman were taken into custody and arrested.  Their names are being withheld.

While police swarmed the West End looking for the shooters, students at Carney Acadamy were in lockdown to keep them safe.  The lockdown was lifted just after 3pm.  Students were dismissed to their parents or boarded busses for the trip home.

Chaves says there were no injuries reported, either at the school or in the neighborhoods where the shootings happened.  Police continue to investigate.
