A Middleborough man charged with being drunk when he struck and killed a Wareham man in a wheelchair has been held on $20,000 bail.

John Vandeusen was held after his lawyer entered pleas of not guilty on his behalf to several charges Tuesday in Wareham District Court, including drunken driving and motor vehicle homicide.

Police say the 28-year-old Vandeusen hit 24-year-old Joshua Macro with his pickup truck at about 1 a.m. Saturday.

Macro and his roommate, Ryan Santos, were returning home after playing pool. The roommate was walking.

Macro was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Vandeusen's lawyer told the court his client has no criminal record and stopped and helped look for Macro, who had been thrown from his wheelchair.

Santos says Vandeusen was crying.
