Uruguay advances to the Round of 16 with a 1-nil victory over Italy, who for the second consecutive World Cup, goes home after the group stage. It was a heated affair, as the Italians lost Claudio Marchisio in the second half to a red card. Star Uruguay striker Luis Suarez apparently bit Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini. This would be the third offense for Suarez, who has been penalized twice in his career for biting opponents.

Costa Rica claimed the top spot in Group D today after holding England to a scoreless draw. Los Ticos will face the runner-up from Group C on Sunday, while England finished its group campaign with just one point and secured its worst-ever World Cup placing.

The U.S. men's national team will face Germany Thursday looking to advance to the knockout stage at the World Cup in Brazil. The Stars and Stripes would move on with a win or draw. A loss could also put the Americans through on a goal differential tiebreaker with Ghana or Portugal.  (Metro Networks Inc.)
