UPS is determined not to get caught short again this holiday season as it was last year, when it was overwhelmed with an unexpectedly high number of packages right before Christmas and thousands of them didn't get to their destination in time for the holiday. So it is hiring nearly twice as many seasonal workers for the holiday season as it did last year, 90,000 to 95,000 part-time workers compared to 55,000 in 2013, to work between October and January.

Other steps UPS is taking include using delivery volume forecasts, opening new and expanded buildings, installing temporary mobile sorting and delivery centers, and adding delivery vehicles, trailers and aircraft.
