Everyone wants the opportunity to beat the best in any sport, especially wrestling.

According to CBS Boston, when Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School student Andy Howland stepped onto the mat to face undefeated senior Deven Schuko of Norton High School, you would think that he would be just a little nervous.

I, Sal "Paco" Lopez, the intern for the Phil Paleologos Show at 1420 WBSM, would definitely be nervous if I was to ever step out on the mat if I was ever a member of the wrestling team at my former high school, Dighton-Rehoboth.

But not Andy! I had the opportunity to go to school with Andy and he was in a couple of my classes. No matter what type of day it was, Andy always showed up to school each day smiling!

The touching story of this inspiring young man is that Andy has down syndrome, but he does not let that stop him from playing the sport he loves. Last week he took on Deven, who is ranked at the top of his Division 3 Wrestling weight class.

Deven stated that “We shook hands and we locked up and he was a tough kid and he bulldogged me over to my back. I couldn’t stop the power.”

The moment that Andy pinned Deven was caught on camera and it has since gone viral. Deven stated that “I’ve been in sports all my life and wrestling I believe is most demanding and for someone like Andy to wrestle and stick with it, I wanted to make his day.”

The bravery from Andy and Deven’s sportsmanship is generating a lot of buzz on social media. Andy’s mother, Debbie Howland stated, “I think the message is sportsmanship is alive and well today and it’s because kids are accepting kids like Andrew wholeheartedly.”
