The president of the University of Massachusetts system has announced that he plans to ask for $519 million in state funding for fiscal year that starts in July.

President Robert Caret said Wednesday the request is $40 million higher than last year and would advance the system's quest for student-state funding parity while allowing for tuition and mandatory fees for in-state undergraduate students to be frozen for a second consecutive year.

Caret said this year's freeze has significantly improved the university's affordability.

The goal is to maintain a balance in which half the system's funding for education programs comes from the state and half comes from students.

The system has almost 72,000 students at undergraduate campuses in Amherst, Boston, Dartmouth and Lowell and a medical school in Worcester. {Associated Press)
